What Sets Your Business Apart From Others?

10/18/2023

What are you doing to set your massage business apart form others? Do you offer the latest modalities, are you learning new techniques? Are you keeping up with the industry to see what is new out there? What about offering at home care for your clients between sessions? How is your environment? Are you giving a cookie cutter massage or are you tailoring your massages to each client that walks in?

There is a lot that goes into setting your business apart from others and these are just some of the questions you should ask yourself.

If you are looking to expand your business and make sure you have clients coming in the door to keep your business open make sure that you are doing these things to bring in new clients and to ensure that your current clients are coming back:
~ Send out a survey asking your clients how their experience was after their first treatment and is there anything you can improve on.

~ Find out from your clients if there are other treatments/modalities that they would like offered at your business.

~ Educate the clients you have and with that being said you have to stay educated yourself, stay current on what’s new and what you can offer your clients.

~When the industry changes make some changes. Offering modalities that people want, making sure information on contraindications have not changed, and offering the best treatments you can.

~Check your environment, is it welcoming, do you feel comfortable? Ask a friend (that you trust to tell you the truth) to come to your business and see if you can change anything to make your environment more inviting for new clients.
Also make sure your business is clean, not just your blankets and sheets after each client but making sure there is no dust, the floor is vacuumed/washed, if the rooms need a fresh coat of coat, give them one. A good way to see what needs to be done, is to become the client yourself, see what they see when they are sitting in the chair going over the intake form with you and look around, lay on the bed and look around making sure the ceiling doesn’t have water marks on it, or if it needs work done to it.

~ Are you giving all your clients the same massage no matter what issue they come in with? This cookie cutter massage maybe what some people want but other may want you to tailor your massage to their needs and that can be done just by asking them what they are looking for today and what they want you to focus on or maybe what areas they do not want worked on.

These are just some of the questions you should ask yourself when trying to set your business apart for others.

The number one question you can ask yourself should be…what makes your business unique? Be honest! If the answer is nothing then comes up with something that can set you apart from others. It doesn’t have to be something major, maybe you add steamed towels to every massage or you offer a take home product after each session. Make it unique to your business!

Massage therapy is an age-old practice recognized for its health benefits, therapeutic effects, and contribution to overall wellness. It involves manipulating the body's soft tissues, providing relief from pain, reducing stress, and promoting relaxation. However, a common question that often emerges among both therapists and clients is whether to use massage lotion or massage oil. This blog post aims to delve into this topic, offering insight and guidance on the best choice for different situations.

Understanding Massage Lotion and Massage Oil
Before we dive into the comparison, it's crucial to understand what massage lotion and massage oil are. Massage lotion is a type of moisturizer used in massage therapy that provides a smooth, lasting glide and absorbs well into the skin without leaving a greasy residue. On the other hand, massage oil is a lubricant made from different types of oils, that could  include essential oils, which helps the therapist's hands glide smoothly over the skin. It offers a longer workability period but can leave the skin feeling oily.

Lotion vs. Oil: The Breakdown
When it comes to choosing between massage lotion and oil, several factors come into play. Each has its own set of advantages and disadvantages, and the choice essentially boils down to personal preference, the client's skin type, and the kind of massage being performed.

Advantages of Massage Lotion

Massage lotion is typically less greasy than oil, making it a good choice for clients who do not want their skin to feel oily after the massage. It is also a better choice for techniques that require more grip and less glide, such as deep tissue massage or sports massage. Massage lotion also tends to absorb more quickly into the skin, which may be beneficial for clients who are prone to acne or have sensitive skin.

Advantages of Massage Oil

On the other hand, massage oil provides a longer glide, which is beneficial for     techniques involving long, flowing strokes, such as Swedish massage. The oil helps to reduce friction between the therapist's hands and the client's skin, allowing for a smoother, more comfortable experience. Moreover, many massage oils are enriched with essential oils, which can offer additional therapeutic benefits through aromatherapy.

The Final Verdict
So, should you use a massage lotion or a massage oil? The answer largely depends on individual preferences and the specific needs of each massage session. Both products have their unique benefits, and the best choice often comes down to the type of massage, the client's skin type, and personal preference. As a rule of thumb, it's always a good idea to discuss the options with your client before the session to ensure their comfort and satisfaction.

In Conclusion
Whether you're a massage therapist or a client, understanding the difference between massage lotion and oil can help you make an informed decision that enhances the massage experience. Remember, the ultimate goal of massage therapy is to promote relaxation, ease pain, and improve wellness, and choosing the right product plays a significant role in achieving these outcomes.
